Sherry Hicks
About the Artist

Sherry is an Oh Coda (Only Hearing Child of Deaf Adults). Both her parents are Deaf as well as her sister. She has one hearing son. American Sign Language is her first language. Sherry has worked as a sign language interpreter for over 25 years in all parts of the USA. Currently, she lives in Santa Rosa, CA where she is on the faculty of the ASL Department at Santa Rosa Junior College. She is charged with setting up an interpreter education program. Most recently she worked as a staff interpreter at Gallaudet University. Sherry holds an MA and MFA in Writing and Consciousness from New College of California.

As a Coda entertainer, her pieces are predominantly in American Sign Language. She has several one-woman shows to her credit that she has both written and performed. Phoenix, The! directed by Janis Cole (1993), Triple Tongues directed by Sherry Glaser (1996), THE! dramaturgy, Jane Norman (2003), and The Color of the Wind, directed by Paul Douglas Michenwicz (2005) At the end of 2005 she was the feature entertainer for California Sign Rise Production in Sherry: An Adventure! She performs nationally and internationally at venues such as: Deaf Way II, International Deaf Club at the World Federation for the Deaf (WFD) convention in Sydney, Australia and at the 2nd World Mental Health and Deafness Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark. She also appeared at W F D in Montreal, Canada as a headliner and in Stockholm, Sweden at Manilaskolen (the school for the Deaf). Sherry appeared at Hande Hoch (Hands UP) Festival in Vienna, Austria. She delights in improvising in ASL and is an entertaining breath of fresh air. She is a veritable feast for our eyes!!

Sherry is a concert interpreter and has worked in the Womyn's music industry for over 20 years accompanying Ferron, Rhiannon, Indigo Girls, Ani DiFranco, Odetta, LL Cool J, Run DMC, John Denver, Rolling Stones, and Van Morrison. She has interpreted alongside Oprah, Maya Angelou, and the Reverend Cecil Williams of GLIDE, as well as, Jan Mirikatani, former poet Laureate of San Francisco, CA. She teams up with Michael Velez and interprets the longest running show in San Francisco, Steve Silver's Beach Blanket Babylon twice a year in April and November. They are into their second decade of providing interpreted performances twice a year of the show.
